Key distinction

Indoor describes the setting, not a fourth court material

Hard, clay and grass identify the playing surface. Indoor tells you the court is inside a covered venue; the event still has an underlying material, and current main-tour indoor stops are generally listed as indoor hard. This page filters the official indoor/outdoor field rather than guessing from weather or a temporarily closed roof.

What to watch

What controlled indoor conditions change for fans

Indoor play removes wind and rain from the live conditions, making scheduling more predictable and ball tosses less weather-dependent. It does not prove that every indoor court is fast: the ITF rates actual surface pace separately, so use the tournament’s court information and the match-up together.

Quick answers

Indoor Tennis FAQs

Is indoor tennis a separate court surface?

No. Indoor describes the covered playing environment. An indoor event still has an underlying surface, usually hard on the current main-tour calendar.

Are all indoor courts fast?

No. Indoor conditions remove wind and rain, but actual court pace depends on the installed surface and is measured separately.

When are most ATP indoor tournaments played?

ATP notes that most indoor tournaments take place late in the year during the Northern Hemisphere winter, although indoor events also appear earlier in the season.
