What to watch
Clay slows the ball after the bounce and normally produces a higher bounce, giving players more time and encouraging longer baseline exchanges. Movement is also distinctive: controlled sliding and recovery position can matter as much as outright shot speed.

The ATP clay calendar is not one continuous block, but its main European spring run includes the Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome Masters 1000 events before Roland Garros. Earlier South American stops and later European events give fans additional clay weeks to follow.
